In the year 2013, McGill University decided to partner with the MasterCard Foundation to offer the scholars program at its institution. Ever since its inception, more than 30 nationals from different countries were able to benefit from the program.

After the program, scholars are expected to return to their country to aid and foster its development. The following sets of applicants are eligible to apply for the Scholarship program:

  • Applicants who have not completed any graduate studies
  • Applicants who have lived and are from any part of the Sub-Saharan Countries
  • Applicants who are willing to return to their country of origin upon completion of their studies.
  • Applicants must have received nominations from a Professor of a recognized Mastercard Foundation or A Professor at McGill University.
  • Applicants must prove that they are from a poor background or low-income background.

The Scholarship is a Masters Scholarship and the duration is two(2) years. The number of scholars that would be awarded is not known. The scholarship would cover both the academic and financial needs of the scholar like Tuition, stipends, and books.

Only those from the following countries are eligible to participate in the scholarship provide they meet the other requirements: Angola, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic Of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Djibouti Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
