How To Calculate The Base Area and Volume Of A Square Prism

  • by

You might be wondering what is a square prism because a lot of people were only taught what a prism was but they did not dive into the different types of prisms.

Square Prism Definition

A square prism is a 3-dimensional shape that has a cuboid figure but its bases are all squares. A square prism looks like a cuboid but it is easy to differentiate them if you understand this definition. There are two types of square prisms namely right square prism and oblique prism.

Properties Of A Square Prism

Some of the properties of a square prism include:

  • Its opposite sides are parallel to each other
  • Its diagonals bisect at a point
  • Its consecutive angles are supplementary
  • Its opposite sides and angles are congruent to each other

A square prism also has the following properties:

Vertices of a square Prism 8
Edges Of A Square Prism12
Faces Of a square Prism6

How To Calculate The Volume Of A Square Prism

The volume of an object is the space occupied by that object and this also applies to a square prism too. The volume of a square prism is the product of the area of the base and height of the prism. The base is a square and the area of a square is given by l * b but in a square, l=b hence we can represent it as l2 or b2 . The formula for calculating the volume of a square pyramid is given by:

Volume of a square pyramid = l2 * h

How To Calculate The Lateral Surface Area Of A Square Prism

The lateral surface area is calculated by multiplying the perimeter of the base(Square) and the height of the prism. Since the base is a square, the perimeter of an object is the distance around the object. In a square, al sides are equal and we would represent each side with l hence the perimeter would be l + l + l + l which would be equal to 4l. The Lateral surface area formula is 4lh

How To Calculate The Surface Area Of A Square Prism

For a prism, its surface area is the sum of twice the base area and lateral surface area. We can recall that while calculating the volume, we’re able to establish the formula for calculating the base area of the square prism and it was l2 and the lateral surface area of a prism is found by multiplying the perimeter of the base by the height of the prism and the formula for calculating the total surface area is given by:

2l2 + 4lh
